I had to give credit where it’s due. She had been calling me every week for about a month now. Something about how their company can assist Prayag. I knew Prayag didn’t need her company’s assistance. I finally gave her the bad news. Undeterred, she threw in her trump card- We are coming out with a Project Management Workshop, and I am sure you would need that for some of your employees.
Now, who wouldn’t need project management? All of us practice it at the work place, either knowingly or unknowingly. It took me back to a study on project management we had done a few months back. As part of the study we interviewed significant number of project managers, as well as those who were aspiring to do a certification in project management, once they had enough experience at the work place.
It was no surprise to note that majority of the respondents practiced project management at their work place. Doing a certification in project management also enhanced their reputation at the work place, and lent more weight to their thoughts/insights. For a significant percentage of respondents, it also enabled them to move further in their careers. And in cases where the respondent had hoped to make a career switch, a certification in project management was one of the methods employed.
Now, the number of institutes which enable you in getting a PM certification have mushroomed over the years. Depending on the requirement of the aspirant, he can choose an institute which provides the required training only on weekdays, or an institute that provides training only on weekends. The number of hours of training required by these institutes also varies. And to get ahead from the competition, these institutes employ various strategies- from providing you discounts for bulk registrations, to reaching out to you through social media like LinkedIn, or relying on the tried and tested referral programmes. It also pays to have current trainees recommend future trainees.
It goes without saying that all the training and certification in the world would come to nought, if one does not implement the principles learnt during the course of his/her PM training, then it would just remain a certificate on paper!
The Bandra Worli Sea-Link is but one example of how an efficient and effective project management can result in something that we can be proud of. All the projects may not be of this magnitude, but that small project that you are working on currently may indeed pave the wave for someting bigger in the future!!
